When you think about it, nine days without onion and garlic sounds like a lot. I used to feel the same way.

But once you start cooking with whole spices, fresh ginger, and the natural sweetness of legumes and vegetables, you realize that alliums were never really the hero of the dish. They were just the starting point.

One quick note before you dive in: most of these recipes call for regular salt. If you observe the Navratri tradition of using only sendha namak (rock salt), swap it in wherever the recipe calls for salt. The quantity stays the same.

This collection of Navratri recipes without onion garlic includes several from the South Indian Navratri tradition.

In South India, Navratri is celebrated as Kolu or Golu, where dolls and figurines are arranged for nine days as an offering to the goddess.

Sundal is the signature food of South Indian Navratri. It is made with a different legume each day and served as prasadam (an offering to the divine). Throughout this collection, you'll find sundal, kosambari, cabbage poriyal, and a few other South Indian recipes.

If you want to explore more allium-free cooking beyond Navratri, my no-onion, no-garlic recipe collection is a great place to start.

A note about Navratri fasting

Navratri fasting (upvas) rules vary by region and family tradition, so think of this as a general guide rather than a strict rulebook.

Most people observing Navratri avoid onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food, and regular table salt (substituted with sendha namak).

In some regions, Navratri fasting recipes also do not include regular grains like wheat and rice and instead use buckwheat (kuttu), water chestnut flour (singhara), sago (sabudana), and amaranth (rajgira). Others include rice in their fasting. Dairy, fruits, nuts, and most vegetables are generally permitted.

All of these Navratri fasting recipes are made without onion and garlic. Where a recipe includes rice, I've noted it so you can decide as per your fasting rules.

Mains and Curries

Paneer Bhurji
Scrambled paneer spiced with ginger, tomatoes, and whole spices, ready in 15 minutes. This is my go-to when I need something quick, filling, and protein-rich on a fasting day. It pairs beautifully with the buckwheat roti below.

Shahi Paneer
Creamy, rich, and made without onion or garlic. The cashew-cream base gives this dish a depth of flavor that makes you wonder why you ever thought onion was necessary in the first place! Save this one for a day when you want something special.

Bengali Moong Dal
In this recipe, the moong lentils are roasted before cooking. This gives them a nutty fragrance that's completely different from your regular dal. This no-onion, no-garlic dal is one of my favorites this time of year.

Bhaja Muger Dal
A moong dal dish with a whole dried red chili, a bay leaf and some cooked green chili peppers is served in a round black bowl. The bowl is placed on a dark grey-black background. A wedge of lemon, some cooked white ice and a white napkin are also placed on the backdrop.
Sauteed Bottle Gourd
Lauki ki sabji is one of the most traditional Navratri vegetable dishes. It's light, easy to digest, and the simple spice base lets the natural sweetness of the bottle gourd shine through.

Rice and Grains

These recipes include rice, so they're best suited for days when you include rice in your fasting. If you avoid grains entirely, pair the curries above with the buckwheat roti in the next section instead.

Vegetable Pulao
A fragrant one-pot rice dish made without onion or garlic, where whole spices do all the work. It makes the entire kitchen smell wonderful, and my family could eat this every day without complaining.
Gluten-free
Vegetable Pulao
Vegetable pulao made with Basmati rice and vegetables is served on a plate with green chutney on the side.
Buttered Rice
Three ingredients, ready in under 30 minutes, and one of the most comforting things you can serve alongside dal or curry. If you've never made rice this way, Navratri is a good excuse to start. It's simple enough to make every day and good enough that you'll want to.

A simple kitchari recipe, made with mung lentils, rice, and spices such as ginger and black pepper, is served in a white bowl with a golden spoon.

Rotis and Dosas

Buckwheat Roti
Kuttu ki roti is one of the most beloved Navratri breads, made with buckwheat flour (kuttu ka atta) and cooked on the stovetop. This recipe gives you soft, pliable flatbreads that pair well with aloo matar, bottle gourd sabzi, or shahi paneer. If you haven't made buckwheat roti before, this is a reliable place to start.
Grain-free
Buckwheat Roti
Grain free gluten free naan bread served with lentils, yogurt dip and okra.
Turmeric Roti
If you include regular wheat flour in your fasting, this spiced flatbread is a lovely option. It has a mild warmth from turmeric and pairs well with any of the dals or curries in this list. No onion, no garlic, and it comes together quickly on the stovetop.

Turmeric Roti
Vegan tortillas with herbs and spices placed in a stack on a wooden board.
Adai: Lentil Crepes
A thick, crispy South Indian crepe made with a mix of lentils and rice. It's more filling than a regular dosa and has a lovely nutty flavor from the combination of lentils. It contains rice, so it's best suited for days when you include rice in your fasting. No onion, no garlic. Traditionally served with avial or coconut chutney, though any raita from this list works just as well.

Salads and Sides

Quick Pickled Carrots
No vinegar, no cooking, no onion or garlic. Just crisp vegetables, mustard seeds, and lime. A small bowl alongside any of the curries above makes the meal feel complete. Swap in sendha namak if you're fasting.

Grain-free
Beet Raita
Beet raita served in a round white bowl with roasted cumin, green chilies, and fresh herbs as garnish.
Sauteed Cabbage
Finely shredded cabbage cooked with mustard seeds, dried red chili, and freshly grated coconut. Ready in under 15 minutes, it's the kind of dish that makes you wonder why you don't make it every day.
Grain-free
Cabbage Poriyal
Cabbage poriyal tempered with whole spices, and curry leaves and topped with fresh, grated coconut is placed in a round bowl plate.
Green Chutney
Cilantro, green chili, lime, and salt: blended in under two minutes. This chutney adds instant brightness to any Navratri plate, and a little goes a long way.
Grain-free
No Mint Green Chutney
Freshly made Indian green chutney is placed in a white round bowl on a dark colored backdrop. Some fresh chilies and cilantro leaves are placed next to the bowl.

Sweets

Finish your meal with a delicious bowl of kheer, one of the most beloved festive sweets.

My Instant Pot rice pudding is made with just three ingredients. It's creamy and fragrant, and making it in the Instant Pot means your hands are free to attend to other things while it cooks. It's ready in a fraction of the time the stovetop version takes.

Make a big batch because it disappears fast!

FAQs

What do you eat on 9 days of Navratri?

During Navratri, most people eat foods without onion, garlic, and regular table salt. Common choices include fresh fruits, dairy products like yogurt and paneer, root vegetables like potatoes and sweet potatoes, and grain-free flours like buckwheat and water chestnut. Many people also eat rice on days when grains are permitted. The exact rules vary by region and family tradition.

What are the various Navratri fasting recipes that you make?

Popular Navratri fasting recipes include paneer dishes like shahi paneer and paneer bhurji without onion or garlic, lentil dishes like moong dal and mung bean soup, and vegetable dishes like aloo matar, aloo jeera, and bottle gourd sabzi.

I also make jeera rice, buttered rice, and kitchari.

Buckwheat roti is the most traditional fasting bread, and chickpea sundal is a classic South Indian Navratri prasadam. All are made without onion, garlic, or regular salt.

What foods are allowed on a Navratri diet?

Most Navratri fasting diets allow fresh fruits, dairy products including milk, yogurt, paneer, and ghee, and most vegetables including potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and bottle gourd. Nuts and peanuts, and grain-free flours like buckwheat, water chestnut, amaranth, and sago are also allowed. Sendha namak (rock salt) is used in place of regular table salt. Onion, garlic, meat, and regular grains like wheat and rice are typically avoided, though some people include rice in their fasting.

What are some traditional South Indian Navratri prasadams?

In South India, Navratri is celebrated as Kolu or Golu, and sundal is the signature prasadam. It is a stir-fried legume dish made with a different bean or lentil each day of the festival.

Chickpea sundal, peanut sundal, and moong dal sundal are among the most common. Other traditional South Indian offerings include kosambari (a raw lentil and vegetable salad), sweetened pongal made with rice and jaggery, and various poriyals (vegetable stir-fries with coconut). All are naturally free from onion and garlic.

Navratri is one of those times of year when fasting constraints push you to cook more thoughtfully, and somehow, the food ends up being better for it.

I hope these recipes for Navratri make your fasting days feel easy and nourishing.

Shubh Navratri to everyone celebrating! If you make any of these dishes, I'd love to hear which ones you reach for first. Leave me a note in the comments below.
